Mexico Gold Coins

In many ways, you can think of Mexico’s official gold bullion coin as one of the rising stars in the industry. If anything, Mexican gold coins have become the hottest products available, popular amongst collectors and investors. However, most of the interest is from North American collectors and investors who are perhaps amongst the first to understand the value of the Mexican Gold Libertad. On its own, the coin’s uniquely impressive design coupled with a high purity level makes it a no-brainer for most coin collectors.

NPMEX currently has a large and growing selection of Mexican Gold Libertads of various types.

History Of Mexican Gold Coins

The Mexican gold coin also referred to as the Libertad, is struck in both gold and silver, serving as the country’s official bullion coin. The modern coin was first introduced in 1981, after which it was produced sporadically throughout the 80s and then the 90s, though it was perhaps only known for being the successor to the once-popular gold Centenario coin.

The Mexican Centenario coin was introduced in 1921 to commemorate the country’s centennial celebration of being independent. The country had announced many celebratory events commemorating the anniversary of their independence, including building a statue in the middle of Mexico City honoring Winged Victory, referred to as the Angel of Independence.

When introduced, the Centenario had a 50 Pesos face value, but it wasn’t legal tender authorized by Banco de Mexico. The obverse of the coin had a Winged Victory, with a coat of arms on the reverse side. While the designs of the Mexican gold Pesos have changed over the years, especially on the modern Libertad, the design motif continues to be the same.

Modern Official Gold Bullion Coin

The Mexican Gold Libertad struck in 1981 was available in ½ oz, ¼ oz, and the 1oz weight. The mint had minted around a million coins during that year in these three weights. However, no other Libertad was struck again until 1991. In 1991, the Mexican Mint reintroduced the Gold Libertad in three weights, with two fractioned weight coins, i.e., the 1/20oz and 1/10oz.

Production was ongoing for four years, with mainly the 1oz coin produced the most to meet demand, with a limited set of fractional weight coins. However, production was soon halted from 1995 right through to 2000. Later the Mexican coins were struck sometime in mind 2000, with only 15,530 coins produced across five different weights.

Starting in 2002, the Libertad was continuously produced by the Mexican Mint. The increased popularity helped to push production to higher figures. As of this writing, the Mexican Mint produces the Gold Libertad in all the standard five of the weights since the year 2000. Though production of these coins are limited.

In addition to the bullion coin, there is also a proof version of the Mexican Gold Libertad produced by the mint. The first proof version was in 1989 with a ½ oz weight and produced for a year, it was then reproduced in 2004, but only the 1/4 oz proof version later entered regular production in 2005 across all five weights.

Starting in 2018, collectors interested in the Gold Libertad have another option in the form of the Reverse Proof Mexican Libertad. The coins available in 1oz and ½ oz weights. The debut in 2018 led to the production of 1000 coins which was later cut to 500 coins. If anything, it is the lowest minted option for collectors.

The striking feature of the gold Libertad coin is the contrasting visual elements when looked at side by side with the Proof Gold Libertad. The coins have a frosted background and mirrored elements, offering a stark visual contrast.

Other Gold Coins Produced By the Mexican Mint

The Gold Libertad is a representation of the modern gold coin(s) produced by the Mexican Mint, making them the only coins the mint has issued. However, before the modern gold bullion coins, the mint was used to produce Mexican gold Gold Peso coins and was used as circulation currency.

The Mexican Peso gold coins were available in many different denominations and issued in various stages throughout the country’s history. The most commonly produced denominations were 2 Pesos, 5 Pesos, 10 Pesos, etc.

The most famous of the coins have to be the 50 Peso Gold Coin, referred to as the Gold Centenario coin. It is a highly sought-after Mexican gold peso by collectors across North America. The coin was first issued in 1921, marking the 100th anniversary of the country’s independence from Spain. In many ways, the Mexican Peso coins still reflect this longing and love for freedom.
